Healing the Wounds of Slavery: reflections and calls to action

Black Mothers have the first and final say on what the impact of the enduring presence of slavery is today in the United States of America.

The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute: Center for Healing, Teaching & Learning, the Steven P. Odom Training for Life Foundation (The SPOT for Life), and We Are Better Together Warren Daniel Hairston Project are organizations led by Black Mothers whose voices need to be heard now more than ever.

The work of Crossing the Waters Institute for Cultural Exchange (CTW) is grounded in the knowledge that giving voice to truth is one of the most powerful instruments to support just change. Our consciousness of the historical legacy and impact of the use of violence on Black bodies, on the Black Family, on the Black community, and on the baseline health of all African-descended people in this country is a core focus of CTW’s work.

Illuminating history hidden in plain sight in the form of Mothers’ stories could not be more relevant to revealing the root causes of violence in the Black community, all of which come back to the disregard for the Black Mother.

Within the historical context and continuum of slavery in the United States and other forms of anti-Black economically-motivated oppression worldwide, a space to tell our stories and share our understanding is a form of medicine that we can provide for each other and ourselves. These Mothers' understanding of what is needed to effect real change offers leadership for the benefit of all people. Moderated by Donna Bivens, please join us as we listen deeply to Mothers Speak.
